Reflections from the Boston Steering Committee

Elana Boehm>>Fri Apr 30, 2010

The CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Steering Committee has been meeting since July 2009 to set the direction of the Boston Fellowship and provide guidance to the fellows and strategic oversight of the program.

Here they share their their thoughts on what they've enjoyed most about being involved with the program:

  1. Having a connection with the fellows and getting to see how the Jewish community is going to open up through their efforts.
  2. The opportunity that we as a Steering Committee have had to be able to learn along with the fellows.
  3. Watching the ideas grow!
  4. Being able to really plug in and provide guidance to a fellow and knowing that I'm having an impact.
  5. Watching ideas and concepts come into fruition on two levels: the fellows' ideas, and the Fellowship itself, as its own start-up.
  6. Working with my fellow and watching how his idea has taken shape and been refined as he's gone through the various modules of the program.
  7. The people on the committee who are so energized by the projects.
  8. Seeing these fellows succeed because of our community's support.
  9. Seeing CJP take a huge risk with a program that worked in Jerusalem, and creating something that is establishing CJP as a pioneering Federation.

Building Teams with your staff, volunteers, and other affiliates

Naomi Fein>>Fri Feb 26, 2010

I recently completed a course as part of my Community Leadership and Philanthropy MA program called "Human Resource Management for Multidisciplinary Organizations."  This class, of course, included reviewing literature on the typical responsibilities of a human resource department, such as hiring, firing and employee evaluation, however that was not the main focus of the class. This class, taught by Dr. Stephen G. Donshik, focused on the use of teams by organizations to best utilize the expertise and skills the human capital within an organization, has to offer.

At PresenTense we have Steering Committees; groups of people from different walks of life, who are employed by PresenTense, volunteers for PresenTense, and receive PresenTense services, that come together to serve the PresenTense community. These Steering Committees can be formed to run a PresenTense Fellowship, to coordinate, draft, edit, and publicize the magazine, to design and implement programs at PresenTense, and much more. The question is do these teams use the expertise and skills of the members to the extent which they could?!

Brachie Sprung>>Wed Nov 4, 2009

Excitement is buzzing through the air as the first major preparations for the PT '10 Summer Institute has gotten under way. Steering Committee members met this past Sunday to organize and share their ideas and everyone is ready and willing to contribute their expertise. There is much work to be done but the road ahead has been set and the goal is clear; to have a strong class of Fellows that will impact the Jewish world.
